Vascular lesions are visible clusters of blood vessels that appear just beneath the surface of the skin. They typically look red or purple and can vary in size, shape, and location anywhere on the body. Common types include port wine stains, broken capillaries, hemangiomas, and cherry angiomas.
Because these lesions do not fade on their own, professional treatment is usually required to significantly reduce or eliminate their appearance.
Spider Veins & Broken Capillaries
Spider veins and broken capillaries are small, visible blood vessels close to the skin’s surface. They often appear as fine red lines, blotches, or web-like patterns — which is where the name “spider veins” comes from. These tiny veins are still actively circulating blood but have become enlarged or damaged.
When the vessel walls rapidly constrict and dilate, they can weaken and rupture. In many cases, they cannot return to their normal size without professional treatment.
Spider veins are commonly found:
- Around the nose and cheeks
- Near the mouth
- On the neck and upper chest
- On the legs
They occur more frequently in individuals with fair, thin, sensitive, or dehydrated skin, where the tissue offers less natural protection.

Causes of Vascular Lesions
Some veins have naturally weaker or abnormal structures. When vein valves are compromised, blood can flow backward and collect inside the vessel. This increased pressure stretches and enlarges the vein over time, making it visible on the skin’s surface.
Vascular lesions are generally not dangerous, but many people choose to treat them for cosmetic reasons.
Common contributing factors include:
- Genetics
- Pregnancy
- Hormonal changes
- Naturally weak blood vessels
- Prolonged standing or sitting
- Tight footwear or high heels that restrict calf circulation
